Dr. Hans Riegel was known for his creativity and his passion for art. In the statutes of his charitable foundation, he stipulated, among other things, the promotion of fine art and historical culture. The foundation is intended to provide long-term support for the care and preservation of art and cultural assets as well as the development of art and cultural assets for the public.
It was particularly important to Dr. Hans Riegel that art should not only be reserved for a small circle of people, but should reach as many people as possible. Accordingly, the programme area focuses on implementing measures that make art and culture accessible to the widest possible audience free of charge. The visual arts in public spaces offer very good conditions for this.
Mural painting is a particularly interesting field for our foundation. Looking exclusively at the recent past, mural painting is usually contextualized with street art or urban art, whereby a disparaging connotation in connection with (illegal) graffiti regularly takes place. The art form is often still rejected or not taken seriously, for example in university teaching, but also in parts of the museum landscape.
In fact, mural painting is one of the oldest cultural achievements of mankind, alongside sculpture. Countless works have been created from early times to the modern era. We are convinced that this art form not only has an extremely valuable past, but can also play an important role in the development of our future living spaces. This is where we would like to start:
The art we enable in public spaces should not be purely decorative or pleasing, but should arouse curiosity, stimulate thought and discourse. We want to create places for cross-generational and cross-societal encounters and constructive dialog with and through the artworks. In our projects, it is important to us that the promotion of young talent is always taken into consideration. We also want to test, document and evaluate interdisciplinary work in this area. We want to explore how mural painting can contribute to positively influencing our current and future living spaces.
Another starting point of our program is the artistic development of children. We want to enable children - regardless of language and background - to discover their environment through art and to get to know the diverse possibilities of expression that the visual arts offer.
